Camper Trailer Security – 10 Best Ways to Protect Your Teardrop from Theft

Did you just purchase your Teardrop trailer and are now wondering how to keep your tiny home on wheels safe? We have been there!

One of the things that are so attractive about Teardrop trailers, is that almost any car can pull them. Unfortunately, this also makes them really vulnerable to theft.

Having been victims of car theft already, we are pretty keen on keeping our trailer safe.

In this post, weโ€™ll explore the top 10 security measures you can take to protect your Teardrop.

From using quality locks to installing alarm systems, these tips will increase the likelihood that your trailer stays secure whether it’s parked at home or on the road.

Let’s dive into the best ways to safeguard your investment.

10 Best Ways to Protect Your Teardrop Trailer from Being Stolen

Remember, there’s no foolproof way to stop a determined thief from stealing your trailer.

However, by adding multiple layers of security, you can make potential thieves reconsider targeting your Teardrop.

1. Get a Tongue Lock

One of the first security devices we purchased, was a trailer tongue lock.

A tongue lock is a device that secures the trailer hitch to prevent theft. It fits over the trailerโ€™s coupler and locks it in place.

This makes it difficult for thieves to hitch your trailer to their vehicle. Tongue locks are made of strong materials, usually steel, and are resistant to cutting and tampering.

They are easy to install and remove, even for newbies, making them convenient for everyday use.

We think that using a tongue lock is an effective first step in deterring trailer theft and protecting your Teardrop when itโ€™s parked or stored.

2. Use a Hitch Lock

A hitch lock is another great security device for your teardrop trailer. It secures the trailer to your towing vehicle by locking the hitch receiver.

This prevents thieves from detaching your trailer and taking it.

You would use a hitch lock if you were leaving your Teardrop hitched to your tow vehicle unattended. Like if you were staying at a hotel for the night, or you were going into the grocery store to do some shopping while on a road trip.

Safety - Lock through hitch pin

Hitch locks come in different styles, including pin locks and coupler locks, and are usually made of durable materials like hardened steel.

They are designed to resist cutting, picking, and tampering. Installing a hitch lock is easy and adds an extra layer of security when your trailer is hitched to your vehicle.

The photo above shows a lock through where the hitch pin would be. Even when we unhitch our trailer, we still put a lock where the pin would be.

This way, if someone were to defeat the tongue lock, they would still need to cut through the pin lock before being able to attach our trailer to their vehicle.

3. Lock Up Your Towing Chains

Locking up your towing chains is a simple yet effective way to double down on your teardrop trailer’s security.

Towing chains are used to connect your trailer to your towing vehicle as a safety backup.

Thieves can sometimes use these chains to steal your trailer, even if other locks are in place.

Safety - Padlock on safety chains

By securing the chains with a strong padlock, you prevent them from being used for theft.

Choose a sturdy padlock that is meant to resist cutting and tampering.

As we mentioned, no locks are foolproof. But all these measures will slow a thief down, and hopefully draw some attention to them.

4. Put Wheel Locks on Your Tires

Wheel locks, also known as tire boots, are a highly effective way to protect your Teardrop trailer from theft.

These devices clamp onto the wheels, preventing them from rotating. This makes it nearly impossible for thieves to tow your trailer away.

In fact, we now use these tire boots on our tow vehicle as well.

Wheel locks are made of heavy-duty materials that are meant to resist tampering.

They are easy to install, you just need to make sure to purchase the appropriate size. For example, what fits our tow vehicle, does not fit our trailer.

By putting wheel locks on your tires, you also add a strong visual deterrent that increases the security of your trailer when parked or stored.

5. Use Locking Lug Nuts on Your Wheels

Locking lug nuts are a smart security measure for your teardrop trailer’s wheels.

These special lug nuts require a unique key to be removed, making it difficult for thieves to remove your wheels.

Standard lug wrenches won’t work on them. Locking lug nuts are made from tough, durable materials, often hardened steel, to resist tampering and theft.

They are easy to install, replacing one of the regular lug nuts on each wheel.

Locking lug nuts works well with a wheel lock, as it makes it difficult for thieves to remove the entire wheel in order to defeat the wheel lock.

6. Install A Security System

Installing an alarm system is another effective way to protect your teardrop trailer from theft.

These security systems can have motion sensors to detect vibration or unauthorized entry and will trigger a loud alarm to deter thieves.

Some alarm systems also come with GPS tracking, allowing you to locate your trailer if it is moved.

Modern alarm systems are easy to install and can be controlled via a smartphone app.

Alarm systems are great for alerting you immediately if there is any suspicious activity around your trailer.

7. Customize Your Teardrop’s Exterior

I really didn’t give this much thought, but customizing your teardrop’s exterior can actually be an effective way to deter theft.

When we did our custom design work on Nellie, it was more about making her unique-looking because that is what we liked.

But unique paint jobs, decals, or distinctive markings also make your trailer easily recognizable. Turns out, thieves are less likely to target a trailer that stands out and can be easily identified.

Customizations also help you quickly spot your trailer if it’s stolen and listed for sale. Don’t laugh, we have heard about this happening! No one said thieves were smart!

Consider adding your name, a logo, or other personal touches that make your trailer unique. And the brighter the colour, the better!

8. Invest in Quality Locks

Switching out your factory door locks for keyless entry, or just a better locking system is something you can also look into.

I had no idea that many of the older model RVs actually all used the same locks!

Knowing that, suddenly makes switching out your locking system that much more necessary!

Unfortunately, this can’t be done on every model of Teardrop trailer.

You will need to speak to your dealership or the trailer manufacturer to see if this is an option for your particular model.

9. Use GPS Trackers

While GPS trackers are not going to prevent your Teardrop from being stolen, they are still a good investment.

These devices allow you to monitor your trailer’s location in real-time via a smartphone app or computer.

We do not have the space to store our trailer at home, so it’s a great way for us to keep track of Nellie when she is not with us.

Safety - Apple AirTags

Not to mention, if the worst-case scenario happens, and your trailer gets stolen, the GPS trackers may help in quickly locating and recovering your Teardrop.

GPS trackers are small, easy to hide, and can be installed discreetly on your trailer.

Many models come with additional features like movement alerts and geofencing, which notify you if your trailer leaves a designated area.

10. Purchase Insurance for Your Trailer

Again, insurance isn’t going to prevent theft of your trailer, but it is important in protecting your investment.

Unlike car insurance, you are not obligated to have insurance for your Teardrop trailer because you can’t drive it.

Insurance covers you in case of theft, damage, or accidents. There are a variety of types of coverage available, so your best bet is to do a little research.

Comprehensive coverage is particularly important as it protects against theft and non-collision-related damage.

Insurance provides peace of mind, knowing you’re covered in unexpected situations, and that you can recover financially if something happens to your trailer.

Be sure to choose a policy that fits your needs and consider working with an agent who understands RV insurance.

Additional Tips for Keeping Your Teardrop Travel Trailer Safe

Here are just a few more tips and pointers for keeping your Teardrop trailer safe:

  • Choose Where You Stay Carefully: Staying in sketchy areas is probably not the best idea, especially if you need to leave the trailer unattended.
  • Be Careful About What You Share on Social Media: Avoid advertising your travel plans or the locations where you store your trailer on social media. It could attract unwanted attention.
  • Always Take Your Keys and Key Fobs: Never leave your keys and key fobs in your trailer especially when you’re away.
  • Keep Valuables Out of Sight: Store valuable items out of plain view. Close your blinds or curtains on the trailer when you are away.
  • Park Close to a Wall or Barrier: Park your Teardrop next to a wall or barrier to limit access to windows and doors, making it harder for criminals to break in.
  • Block with a Towing Vehicle: If possible, park a tow vehicle in front of or behind your Teardrop to create a physical barrier that prevents thieves from hitching and stealing your trailer.
  • Get to Know Your Camping Neighbors: Familiarize yourself with neighbours at campgrounds to watch out for each other’s trailers.
  • Use Motion-Activated Lights: Install motion detector lights around your trailer to deter potential thieves by illuminating the area.
  • Turn It Around: Park your trailer with the hitch facing away from easy access. Most stolen trailers are targeted because they are unhitched and easily accessible. Make it more difficult for thieves to hitch up and drive away.
  • Secure Your Trailer at Home: When parked at home, consider using a security fence or security cameras, or parking your trailer in a locked garage.
