On paper, the BODEGACOOLER checks all the right boxes.
It offers dual-zone cooling, multiple power options, app control, and enough capacity for extended camping trips.
But specifications only tell part of the story. Here’s how it performed in real-world camping conditions.
Why We Decided to Try a Portable Fridge
For years, we camped with a traditional cooler. It did the job, but it also came with a few frustrations.
Buying fresh bags of ice every few days became part of every trip, and it annoyed us to no end.
As the ice melted, food containers sat in water, labels peeled off, and we ended up digging through the watery mess to find what we needed.
Frozen foods were another challenge. While our teardrop trailer has a decent-sized refrigerator, the freezer is tiny.
When I can barely fit a pint of Ben & Jerry’s inside the freezer, you know there’s a problem!
Before our next camping trip, we decided it was finally time to see if a portable refrigerator and freezer could make life a little easier.
Our goal was pretty simple. We wanted to stop buying ice, bring more frozen food, and spend less time worrying about our cooler.
It really isn’t a lot to ask for.
Or was it?
Our First Impressions
When the BODEGACOOLER arrived, the first thing we noticed was how solid it felt.
The hard exterior, sturdy handles, and well-fitting lid gave us confidence that it would stand up well to regular camping trips.
At 50 litres (53 quarts), it isn’t a small cooler, so you’ll want to think about where you’re going to transport it.
We carried ours in the bed of our Toyota Tundra, and it fit perfectly with the rest of our camping gear.
Just be sure to measure the height if you’re using a tonneau cover. Ours just squeezed underneath. One size larger and we would have had a big problem!
The evening before leaving, we plugged the cooler into a household outlet to pre-cool both compartments.
Although the controls are fairly intuitive, we spent a few minutes reading through the instruction manual to make sure we understood all of the features before setting our temperatures.
We also downloaded the BODEGACOOLER app, which connected quickly and allowed us to monitor and adjust the temperatures from our phones.
It wasn’t something we absolutely needed, but it was a nice feature to have.
The next morning, we loaded the cooler with pre-chilled food before heading out. That meant the BODEGACOOLER was maintaining the temperature rather than working to cool down warm groceries.
Using the Dual-Zone Fridge and Freezer
The main reason we bought the BODEGACOOLER was for the freezer.
Our trailer’s refrigerator works well, but the freezer simply doesn’t hold enough food for longer trips.
The dual-zone design solved that problem.
For our trip, we used the smaller compartment as the freezer and the larger compartment as the refrigerator.
The freezer held our meat, frozen vegetables, freezer meals, and, of course, our stash of ice cream!
The refrigerator side became home to drinks, dairy products, condiments, and a few extra groceries that didn’t fit inside our trailer.
One thing worth pointing out is that the smaller compartment is the only section that can operate as a freezer, while the larger compartment remains a refrigerator.
If you’d rather use the entire cooler as one large refrigerator or freezer, that’s an option too.
Each compartment has its own controls, allowing you to set different temperatures depending on what you’re storing.
For the first time, we were able to pack enough frozen food without constantly asking ourselves, “Will this fit in the freezer?”
How Well Did It Keep Food Cold?
This is where the BODEGACOOLER really impressed us.
We set the temperatures before leaving home and, other than making the occasional adjustment, hardly thought about them again.
The refrigerator (which we kept at 4ยฐC) stayed consistently cold, while the freezer (set at -18ยฐC) had no trouble keeping our frozen food solid.
Milk, cheese, yogurt, deli meat, fresh vegetables, and drinks all stayed fresh, while steaks, chicken, hamburgers, frozen vegetables, and our all-important stash of ice cream remained frozen until we were ready to use them.
Like most campers, we were constantly opening the cooler.
Whether we were grabbing a drink, making lunch, or getting ingredients ready for dinner, the lid was opened dozens of times throughout the day.
The only time we noticed the temperature climb slightly was when the cooler was sitting in direct sunlight.
Even then, it only fluctuated by a few degrees before quickly returning to the set temperature.
Perhaps the biggest surprise was how quickly we stopped thinking about it.
Aside from our boondocking experiment, we never found ourselves wondering if our food was staying cold or whether anything in the freezer was beginning to thaw.
In fact, the freezer passed the ultimate test… it kept our ice cream frozen for the entire trip.
Power Options & Energy Consumption
One of the things we liked most about the BODEGACOOLER was its flexibility.
Before leaving home, we plugged it into a standard household outlet to pre-cool both compartments.
For the drive to the campground, we switched it over to the 12V outlet in our Toyota Tundra, then plugged it into campground electricity once we arrived.
We also spent three days boondocking, giving us the opportunity to see how well the cooler held its temperature without power.
Knowing we would be without electricity, we intentionally packed several frozen water bottles in both compartments to help keep everything colder for longer.
As an added bonus, the bottles provided plenty of ice-cold drinking water as they thawed!
The freezer kept our food safely frozen for about two days. By the third day, the temperature had climbed to just below the freezing point.
While everything was still very cold, we moved our frozen meat into our trailer’s freezer rather than take any chances.
The refrigerator compartment performed even better, staying at a safe temperature throughout the three days.
Although we didn’t measure the cooler’s power consumption, we never found it to be excessive.
The compressor cycled on and off as needed rather than running continuously, and the choice of MAX and ECO modes lets you prioritize either faster cooling or lower power consumption.
Whether we were at home, travelling, camping with hookups, or spending a few days off-grid, the BODEGACOOLER adapted well to every situation we threw at it.
Temperature Controls and App
The BODEGACOOLER can be controlled using either the digital display on the cooler or the companion app.
We downloaded the app before leaving on our trip, and it connected within a few minutes.
From the app, we could monitor the temperature in both compartments, adjust the settings, and switch between cooling modes without opening the lid.
It was particularly handy while driving or relaxing around the campsite.
Just keep in mind that the app uses Bluetooth rather than Wi-Fi. As long as you’re within Bluetooth range, it works well.
If you’re expecting to monitor the cooler from across the campground, that’s not going to happen.
Although we found ourselves using the app most of the time, the controls on the cooler itself are just as straightforward.
If you prefer not to use the app, you won’t be missing out on anything essential.
Storage Capacity
With a capacity of 50 litres (53 quarts), the BODEGACOOLER held more than we expected.
The freezer compartment easily accommodated enough frozen food for our trip, including steaks, chicken, hamburgers, frozen vegetables, and desserts.
Rather than filling the refrigerator compartment with everything, we mainly used it for drinks, condiments, and a few snacks.
That freed up space in our trailer’s refrigerator for fresh fruits, vegetables, eggs, and other perishables.
Using both refrigerators together worked really well. Everything had its place, making it much easier to find what we needed without constantly rearranging food.
The removable baskets were another nice touch, keeping smaller items organized and within easy reach.
For two people, we found the storage capacity to be more than adequate.
Noise Level
One concern we had before buying the BODEGACOOLER was whether the compressor would be noisy.
Thankfully, it wasn’t.
Our first test was at home, where we left it running overnight in the kitchen.
Even while watching television in the same room, we barely noticed it cycling on and off.
Later in the trip, we brought the cooler inside our teardrop trailer overnight.
We expected the compressor to be much more noticeable in such a small space, but it wasn’t. It quietly did its thing while we slept.
If compressor noise is one of your concerns, we don’t think it should be.
Based on our experience, the BODEGACOOLER remained impressively quiet.
What We Liked (and One Thing We’d Change)
After spending several trips using the BODEGACOOLER, it became clear that it was designed with campers in mind.
It was dependable, easy to use, and fit naturally into our camping routine. Once we had the temperatures set, there wasn’t much else to think about.
We also appreciated its flexibility. Most of the time, we used it as a refrigerator and freezer.
But if we ever needed additional refrigerator space, we could easily convert the entire unit into a fridge instead.
The removable baskets made it easy to stay organized, and the app gave us a quick way to check temperatures without leaving our camp chairs.
If we could change one thing, it would be the lid.
On the 50L model, both compartments are accessed by lifting a single lid.
Some of BODEGACOOLER’s larger models feature a split lid, allowing you to open just one compartment at a time.
A split lid would reduce the amount of cold air escaping when you’re simply grabbing a drink or one frozen item.
That certainly wasn’t a dealbreaker, but it’s something we’d love to see on a future version of the 50L model.
Is This Cooler Right for You?
The BODEGACOOLER won’t be the right choice for every camper, but we think it’s an excellent option if you spend a lot of time outdoors.
It’s a great fit for:
- RV and trailer campers looking for extra refrigerator and freezer space.
- Campers who are tired of buying bags of ice.
- Families taking longer camping trips.
- Road trippers who enjoy cooking instead of eating every meal at a restaurant.
- Campers who split their time between serviced campgrounds and the occasional boondocking trip.
On the other hand, if you only camp once or twice a year for a weekend, a traditional cooler may still be all you need.
For us, the decision came down to how often we camp.
After using the BODEGACOOLER throughout the summer, we know it’s a piece of camping gear we’ll continue bringing on future trips.
Is It Worth the Money?
For us, the answer is yes.
A compressor cooler costs considerably more than a traditional ice chest, so it’s fair to wonder whether it’s worth the investment.
We think the answer depends on how you camp.
If you’re an occasional weekend camper, you may not see enough benefit to justify the extra cost.
But if you spend weeks on the road each year like we do (or you are a foodie or master chef), it’s a different story.
The BODEGACOOLER solved several problems we’d been dealing with for years.
We no longer needed to buy bags of ice, we finally had enough freezer space, and our food stayed organized throughout the trip.
More importantly, it made camping a little more enjoyable. That’s something we think is worth paying for.
Final Thoughts
Before buying the BODEGACOOLER, we weren’t sure how much of a difference a portable refrigerator and freezer would make.
Now we can’t imagine camping without one.
It has earned a permanent spot on our packing list, and we expect it will be coming with us on camping trips for many years to come.
Will the BODEGACOOLER come on every camping trip from now on?
Absolutely.
